Why Gavi did not play a minute in Barcelona’s win over Atlético

April 4, 2025

An insight into the reasoning behind Barcelona star Gavi’s lack of minutes in the club’s latest outing has been forthcoming online.

Barcelona were of course back in action on Wednesday night.

Turning attentions back towards matters in the Copa del Rey, the Blaugrana made the trip to Spain’s capital, for the 2nd leg of their semi-final tie with Diego Simeone’s Atlético.

When all was said and done, Hansi Flick’s troops emerged on the right side of a 1-0 result, to march on to the competition’s finale.

As alluded to above, though, playing no part in as much was midfield starlet Gavi.

Youngster Gavi was actually tipped to start at the Metropolitano in the buildup to Wednesday’s clash, in the absence of Dani Olmo.

Not only was Fermín López preferred by Hansi Flick, though, but Gavi failed to even get off the bench.

And now, 24 hours on, an explanation for precisely why has been provided.

As per a report from Diario Sport:

‘Gavi felt some discomfort in his knee during the warm-up, and Flick preferred that the Andalusian not come onto the pitch.’
