West Ham United: David Moyes ‘dignity’ questioned after poor form, fans are not happy

April 17, 2024

Frank McAvennie has questioned David Moyes’ decisions after West Ham fell to back-to-back 2-0 defeats to Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League and Fulham in the Premier League.

The former Hammers man could not understand how the boss claimed his side were the better team against Fulham as he insisted he must’ve been watching a different game.

He went on to explain that, with the Hammers’ defensive record as poor as it has been, it would have made far more sense to go into the Bayer Leverkusen clash on the front foot.

McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – was baffled by the defeat to Fulham and the choice to park the bus against Leverkusen as he fumed at Moyes’ decisions.

“He came out and said they were the better team in the first half, I’m thinking ‘What game were you watching? Maybe in the first ten minutes but after that, no,” McAvennie fumed.

“They went over to Germany and set up for a 0-0, it’s crazy, you’ve not got the best defenders in the world so why would you not set up trying to have a go at least? At least go out with a bit of dignity and try to do something.

“Fulham, I don’t understand that. You can tell the fans are not happy.”

David Moyes sack pressure increasing at West Ham
Jamie Carragher recently insisted Moyes could decide to leave the club to protect his own reputation if he can guide the Hammers to a strong Europa League finish and finish seventh or eighth in the Premier League.

However, the performance in Leverkusen was particularly frustrating for the fans who witnessed their team have just one shot in the entire game before losing late in the game to two goals once Leverkusen’s relentless pressure finally told.

It was evidence as has been expressed for a while that if you continue to sit back and invite pressure, no matter how well you do for the majority of the game, the back line will crack eventually – and that’s exactly what happened in Germany.

Alan Brazil spoke out after the game in support of the boss but did question the lack of attacking opportunities in the first leg.

The criticism of Moyes has come largely as a result of the style of play rather than the results at the London Stadium, but with results now starting to dip as well, serious questions have to be asked about his future.
