Wrexham reach £7.2m deal to land Argentinian centre-back

July 15, 2026

Wrexham are eager to bolster their defensive ranks ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, and a new face is on the way in.

Wrexham have agreed a deal to sign centre-back Matias Moreno from Serie A side Fiorentina.
Wrexham are looking to improve on last season’s 7th-place finish by bolstering their ranks with new faces. And, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, a deal has been struck to sign defender Matias Moreno.

The Argentine centre-back is expected to leave Fiorentina this summer after a campaign on loan in La Liga with Levante UD. A deal for Moreno is set to cost €8.5m (around £7.2m), but La Viola are set to retain a hefty 50% sell-on clause too.

Moreno, started out his career in his native Argentina before moving to Fiorentina in the summer of 2024. He made 12 appearances in his maiden campaign with the Italian side before his season-long loan in Spain.

What will Matias Moreno bring to Wrexham?
Moreno has gained a good amount of senior experience at 22, and at a good level too. His time in Serie A and La Liga will equip him well for a move to the Championship with Wrexham.

At his age, he has plenty of room to develop. The Red Dragons will hope that he can match their upward trajectory, potentially developing into a player who can stay the course if they rise to the Premier League in the years to come too.

Moreno is a defence-first centre-back who reads the game well, as displayed by his tally of 37 interceptions last season, putting him in the top 7% of La Liga defenders. He was part of a solid defensive outfit too, keeping eight clean sheets in 27 starts.

Standing at 193cm tall, Moreno should be a powerful addition to the Wrexham backline. The sizeable fee splurged to bring him in suggests there is belief he can have a key role in their defence.

The Verdict: Matias Moreno deal may bring Wrexham defensive departures
Moreno will come into the Wrexham squad and hold a key role from the get go. He will have to compete for his place, but his arrival may well mean departures await.

Max Cleworth and Callum Doyle will be backed to hold key roles and may well join Moreno in Parkinson’s favoured back three. However, the likes of Dominic Hyam and Zak Vyner will be eager to battle for their places.

Wrexham’s current centre-backs

Callum Doyle – 22
Max Cleworth – 23
Dominic Hyam – 30
Zak Vyner – 29
Lewis Brunt – 25
Conor Coady – 33
Dan Scarr – 31
Of the defenders on the books, Dan Scarr, Conor Coady and Lewis Brunt seem the most likely to depart. The former struggled to impress after arrival last season and ended up spending the rest of the campaign on loan at Charlton Athletic.
