The real reason why Nottingham Forest signed Giovani Reyna with Nuno ‘terrified’
A top journalist has now claimed exactly why Nottingham Forest chose to sign Giovanni Reyna during the January transfer window.
However, when Forest took Reyna on loan from Dortmund for the second half of 2023/24, it was a signing that caught the eye.
Forest had Andrey Santos on loan from Chelsea for the first half of the season but he only managed seven minutes of game time in the Premier League.
That didn’t work out and Forest sent him back and pinched Reyna instead – a move which also had very limited success.
Now, it’s been claimed why the Reds actually decided to take a chance on the American star.
The real reason why Nottingham Forest signed Giovanni Reyna
It appears that the 21-year-old was only ever going to come in at the City Ground as a backup.
Daniel Taylor is a Forest-supporting, award-winning journalist and he’s got his finger on the pulse at Forest.
Taylor said: “Reyna was signed because Nuno was terrified, put bluntly, of MGW getting injured – and he was another wide option.”
Reyna started just two games during his time at the club, making nine appearances in total and failing to register a goal contribution.
Reyna was the right player at the wrong time
It’s only natural that Nuno Espirito Santo was worried about losing Gibbs-White to injury.
Still, it’s a shame for Reyna that he came to Forest with high hopes and then didn’t get the chance of a regular run in the team.
Reyna was probably the right player at the wrong time.
He looks to have little future at Dortmund and in an ideal world, Forest would have signed him, given him a run and then tried to get him permanently.
Ultimately, he’s played so little football at Forest that it’s impossible to judge exactly what he’s capable of in the Premier League.
At another time, Reyna’s profile might have been perfect for Forest but during 2023/24, he was only ever going to be deemed as a backup option.
