Xabi Alonso could strike deal Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold would love after ‘Man Utd chat’

March 26, 2024

Trent Alexander-Arnold may get his wish to excel in Liverpool’s midfield next season if the club manage to appoint Xabi Alonso. The Reds are currently battling Bayern Munich to acquire the services of the Spaniard, who is still targeting a treble this season with Bayer Leverkusen. The club are currently 10 points clear in the Bundesliga, and still in the DFB-Pokal and Europa League.

Leverkusen themselves are still battling to keep Alonso, but should the Spaniard join Liverpool, he could look to take some of his current stars with him. And top of the list is likely to be Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who has been a key performer for the league leaders in the 2023/24 campaign.

He’s made 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 times and providing 11 assists. And one of those goals came in the pivotal 3-0 win over Bayern in February, a result which put clear daylight between the two clubs in the table.

The 23-year-old joined Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021, but the following year his representatives reportedly held talks with Manchester United. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils were told that the two-cap international was open to a move amid a desire to play in the Premier League.

Despite being contracted to Leverkusen until 2028, a move to England for Alonso could now define Frimpong’s future. And it would potentially allow Liverpool to play Alexander-Arnold in a central midfield role.

Having been criticised for his positional play in defence, the 25-year-old dazzled in the middle of the park in his side’s 6-1 win at Leeds last season. That led to him being deployed in his new position by Gareth Southgate, impressing last June in Euro 2024 qualifying wins over North Macedonia and Malta.
