Wolverhampton Wanderers among clubs keen on signing Sporting Lisbon’s Nuno Santos?

May 10, 2023

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly identified Sporting Lisbon midfielder Nuno Santos as a potential summer transfer target.
After a concerning first half of the season, Wolves have been revived under Julen Lopetegui, who has taken the club from bottom of the Premier League table to safety with three matches remaining.

The West Midlands outfit spent in the region of £73m to give themselves the best opportunity of surviving in the top flight, but that is intended to be just the first step of their plans under the former Spain, Real Madrid and Sevilla boss.

Those aforementioned plans will likely have to be facilitated by at least one major sale, with midfielders Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes both being heavily linked with a departure from Molineux.

Although Wolves are well stocked for options in the centre of the pitch, it appears that they are giving consideration to at least one notable addition.

Wolves are one of many clubs who have taken an interest in Santos.

While Sporting have not endured one of their best Primeira Liga campaigns in recent years, Santos has still contributed eight goals and four assists from his 28 appearances.

Furthermore, the 28-year-old has accumulated eight starts and four substitute outings in Europe this season, Sporting eventually reaching the Europa League quarter-finals before being edged out by Juventus.

Santos has over two years remaining on his contract, leaving Sporting in a position where they could retain the services of the left-sided player.

Nevertheless, it is reported that the Portuguese giants are willing to consider bids of €15m (£13.02m) for a player who has contributed 27 goals and 28 assists from 134 appearances during his three years at Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The two clubs are no strangers to doing business with deals involving Ruben Vinagre and Nunes having taken place over the past two seasons.

Nottingham Forest are also said to be monitoring the situation, their interest dependent on whether they can retain their Premier League status.

Torino, Eintracht Frankfurt and Nice are allegedly willing to offer Santos a change of scenery with his entire career having been spent in his homeland.
