Aston Villa were always going to make a statement in the summer transfer market, it just wasn’t until Champions League qualification was confirmed just how big in scale it would truly be.
They did have their challenges along the way – Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) being the first hurdle to clear. As painful as Douglas Luiz’s exit was after five faithful years of service, it was remedied by the captures of Ian Maatsen, Samuel Iling-Junior, Enzo Barrenechea, Ross Barkley and Lewis Dobbin.
And that was only the start. Villa welcomed three more names – Jaden Philogene and Cameron Archer returned (briefly), before Amadou Onana, the most expensive of the bunch, was announced as a surprise to many.
