Super Saturday stakes high as Freiburg face Bayern Munich

April 8, 2023

Brace yourself, Bundesliga fans, for it’s fourth versus first in what is set to be a Super Saturday showdown not to be missed with Freiburg hosting Bayern Munich in the battle of Europa-Park Stadion.

The dust having barely settled on their Allianz Arena celebrations following a dramatic DFB Cup, quarter-final victory against Bavarian giants Bayern, Christian Streich’s men play host to the Bundesliga leaders, who will be thirsty for revenge on their visit to the Black Forest.

bundesliga.com assesses some of the key details ahead of this spellbinding Super Saturday Matchday 27 fixture.

Fortress Freiburg awaits battling Bayern

Thomas Tuchel’s team lay claim to the division’s handsomest return on their travels this term, with Bayern topping the away table thanks to seven wins and 33 goals scored on the road. To put that latter stat into perspective, Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Augsburg are next best on the away goals list, each with 21.

However, with Freiburg currently laying claim to a club record 12-game unbeaten run at home in the Bundesliga [eight wins, four draws], Saturday’s hosts will hold no fear concerning the arrival of the record champions. In all games, home and away, the team from Breisgau are currently unbeaten in seven in Germany’s top flight.

Speaking after witnessing his team win for the first time away against Bayern in Tuesday’s DFB Cup triumph, Streich explained, “We lost many games against Bayern over the years, now we have won one, it’s nothing more than that. The team fought passionately. We were well positioned all over the pitch and [played with] togetherness.” The Freiburg coach will no doubt be calling for more of the same on Saturday.
