‘Special place for me’ – Van de Beek contradicts agent with comments about his future
Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is expected to look for a new club this summer, although his recent comments about the upcoming transfer window contradict his agent.
Van de Beek, 27, has not been able to settle at United since his move from Ajax in 2017.
To make matters worse for the Netherland international, his loan spell at Eintracht Frankfurt hasn’t gone to plan after joining the Bundesliga club until the end of the season in January, making just four starts in the league.
As far as United are concerned, they will be looking for the best deal in the summer, but it remains to be seen who will offer Van de Beek a permanent contract.
It doesn’t look like Eintracht Frankfurt will be signing him, which means his next destination is unknown.
A return to Ajax has been tipped by sections of the media, although Van de Beek’s agent, Guido Albers, believes it is not an option. Nor is remaining in the Premier League.
“Donny does not want to stay in the Premier League, also because United do not want that. That is not a good choice for him. He needs to return to a club that plays good football. In any case, he will not return to Ajax,” Albers told ESPN.
Van de Beek has since given an interview to Ziggo Sport and he appeared open to an Ajax return four years after departing the Eredivisie club.
“Why not?” he replied when asked about a potential homecoming, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “Ajax has always been a special place for me, so we certainly cannot rule that out. At Ajax, the only thing matters: winning and becoming champions.
“Now European football and fifth place is the highest achievable after a turbulent year. It’s difficult now, but Ajax always bounces back.
“I have also had mixed years due to injuries. But now I’m looking forward again. If I keep working hard, I’m confident things will turn out fine.
“It is up to you to turn it around. I’m working on that. I am convinced of my own qualities. If I stay fit and keep working hard, I will definitely be fine.”
