Real Madrid unlikely to extend Rudiger’s contract -report

July 29, 2025

Real Madrid are reportedly not planning to extend Antonio Rüdiger’s contract beyond its current expiration in the summer of 2026, according to a report published by AS. This decision would make Rüdiger a free agent at the end of the 2025–26 season.

The German international, now 32, has been an important figure in Madrid’s back line over the past two seasons. However, recent injury concerns have raised doubts about his long-term fitness and ability to continue performing at the highest level. His performances during the most recent FIFA Club World Cup reportedly left the club’s coaching staff with lingering concerns, despite his presumed role as a starter when the La Liga season begins in two weeks.

Throughout the campaign, Rüdiger is expected to face strong competition for minutes from Eder Militao—who is returning from injury—and Raul Asencio, both of whom are seen as long-term pieces for the future.

David Alaba’s contract also expires in the summer of 2026, and should both veterans depart, Real Madrid could be looking at a significant overhaul of their central defense in the near future.
