Real Madrid to continue counting on veteran duo at right-back next season
Real Madrid’s game-changing summer transfer window was expected to replenish several departments across the field. While the priority was always forward signings, the full-back department was a close second.
However, the board’s ambitious plans are no longer seen as feasible and the club continue aborting operations with potential targets. Multiple sources go as far as to say that the club will not make any more signings.
According to reports from AS, Los Blancos are certainly closed for business in the right-back department. Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez will remain the ones to man the defensive position next season.
The duo has done well in recent years to cover at right-back, and the need for a new signing arises because of their age and not a lack of quality. At 31 and 32 years respectively, Carvajal and Vazquez still have at least two years left in their boots before a backup becomes an urgent requirement.
Moreover, Carlo Ancelotti can also trust Nacho Fernandez to play as a deputy in the position if the need arises.
Last season, Carvajal made 20 league starts for the Merengues and racked up two assists in that duration. Further, he made over five defensive actions and one key pass per game.
Vazquez, meanwhile, had a more limited role and was clearly the manager’s second choice. The 32-year-old had five contributions to show in the league alone, but still managed just 12 starts.
The Spaniard has been linked with an exit, with clubs in Italy showing some interest. However, he is not looking to leave the club this summer.
As such, the dynamics at right-back are not expected to change heading into the 2023/24 season. Ancelotti will continue to count on Carvajal as his first-choice right-back for his superior defensive solidity and understanding of the position with his fellow Spaniard serving as a direct deputy.
