Real Madrid suffer double blow despite winning vs Valencia
Real Madrid managed to get a 2-0 win and the all-important three points against Valencia to keep within touching distance of Barcelona. The Catalan giants still lead their eternal rivals by five points. In a game that had its fair share of controversy, strikes from Vini Jr and Marco Asensio made the difference for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
While the win might be a massive positive, Real Madrid have a fair bit to be worried about as well coming out of the match.
Two key players picked up injuries against Valencia. Eder Militao was forced off in the first half itself and then Karim Benzema, who has struggled with a number of fitness problems this season, appeared to suffer another injury at around the hour mark and was taken off.
It is safe to say that that is not good news for Real Madrid, who did not make any additions to their squad in the January transfer window. And one can only hope that these are not long-term injuries.
Real Madrid suffer double blow despite winning vs Valencia
Real Madrid’s squad depth was viewed as a problem coming into the season, and yet, the club have not done enough to rectify that.
They seem to be going through a never-ending cycle of injuries this season, and are never anywhere near full-strength. Of course, the team deserves a lot of credit for remaining competitive despite their issues but at the same time, it is almost impossible to compete for major trophies under these circumstances.
One thing that has helped the club amidst all this is how some unlikely heroes have stepped up. Dani Ceballos is a prime example. Just a few weeks ago, it was looking like the club would let him walk out at the end of his contract. Now, he looks like the best midfielder they have on current form. Eduardo Camavinga has raised his game a couple of levels as well, after what was a difficult first half of the season for the French youngster.
