Real Madrid set to give up pursuit of €150 million defensive duo

May 16, 2024

Real Madrid have very carefully detailed most part of their 2024 summer, with Kylian Mbappe’s signing their absolute priority. They have been chasing the Frenchman for more than half a decade at this point, and will finally complete the transfer this summer.

However, rumours of them pursuing a left-back and a centre-back were also in the air, especially with the injuries to the backline this season.

Ferland Mendy had been dealing with constant setbacks, while David Alaba and Eder Militao both tore their ACLs.

Alphonso Davies was identified as the front-runner for their left-back problems, with the Canadian not expected to renew his contract with Bayern Munich this summer due to high salary demands.

At the same time, Madrid were also pushing for a move for Lille’s Leny Yoro, who has been marked with a €100 million price tag.

After reaching the Champions League final, though, and en route a 99-point campaign in La Liga, Madrid seem to have decided they are happy with their squad.

Yoro, Davies will have to wait

According to a report published by COPE, Madrid have decided to give up their pursuits of Leny Yoro and Alphonso Davies in the summer.

They are happy with their squad and players right now, and believe signing the two players is not as important right now.

This is largely due to Ferland Mendy’s brilliant resurgence over the second-half of the season as he has now cemented his place as a starter. He has the backing of Carlo Ancelotti, and is now also expected to be a part of the France National Team for the Euros.

Antonio Rudiger has had an exceptional season, as well, and with Eder Militao now fully fit as well, Madrid are in no rush to splash the cash on a centre-back as early as this summer.

Once Kylian Mbappe’s signing is finalised, Madrid may move to sign another forward to fill the gap in their attack, and could potentially also go for a midfielder, especially if Luka Modric and Dani Ceballos end up leaving.
