Pep Guardiola makes Man City quit decision if they beat Arsenal to Premier League title

May 19, 2024

Pep Guardiola has a contract at Manchester City until 2024 and has made it clear he knows what is coming next.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has dismissed suggestions that no other manager can win the Premier League while he’s in charge, insisting he still has unfinished business at the club.

If City defeat West Ham at the Etihad, they will make history as the first team to be crowned champions in four consecutive seasons, marking their sixth title in seven years.

Despite rumours that Guardiola might leave before the final 12 months of his contract after creating more records, the City manager is adamant about returning next season.

“Yes, I have a contract,” Guardiola confirmed in his final pre-match press conference of the campaign. “I want to be here next year, yes.”

He also refuted the idea that City’s dominance is detrimental to the Premier League, adding: “If the narrative was that I was winning by 20 points I would say ‘yes, I’m a genius, I’m so good.

“But it’s not. The Premier Leagues we have won the others could have won – and Arsenal can win this one.”

Guardiola maintained his respect for Liverpool throughout these years, stating, “A win is a win.”

“The winners smell good, and everyone wants to copy that. There is a lot of work behind it – a lot. Nothing you have done in the past gives you the right (to win). It’s completely the opposite.

“It’s a lot of work for all departments the backroom staff, the medical department, the office department, how they care about those few, few inches.”

“It is ridiculous how good the balance is. Otherwise you cannot be where we are.”

Guardiola, who finished third in his first season as City boss behind Antonio Conte’s Chelsea, has seen Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool take the title in 2020 ahead of his team.

City have clinched two of their previous titles under Guardiola at the expense of Liverpool on the final day.

With Arsenal having been rallied to the title with two games to spare last year, the champions are aware that Mikel Arteta’s side could snatch the crown if they falter against the Hammers and the Gunners triumph over Everton at the Emirates.

In 2018, City became the first team to accumulate a century of points. A year later, they were the first club to secure a domestic Treble.

Last year, they matched Manchester United’s Treble success by winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

This Saturday, they will face United in the FA Cup Final for the second consecutive season, heading to Wembley with the opportunity to become the first club to achieve a double Double.
