‘One of the best’ – Hull City ace hailed as ex-Leeds United star raises Whites question

November 27, 2025

Former Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has hailed Joe Gelhardt and says he’s delighted to see the impact the forward has made at Hull City.

Bamford has revealed how he helped Gelhardt during their time together at Elland Road, and admits he’s unsure as to why the highly-rated former Wigan Athletic youngster wasn’t utilised more.

Gelhardt didn’t play a single minute in the Championship for the Whites last season, before he joined City on loan in January, where he scored five crucial goals to help keep the Tigers in the league.

Since returning to City in the summer, Gelhardt has been in terrific form and bagged October’s Goal of the Month award for his winner against Leicester City.

His goal at QPR last weekend took his tally to eight for the season, with six in his last eight games and he’ll hope to keep that run going when the Tigers aim to bounce back from successive defeats at in-form Stoke City on Saturday.

Bamford, now at City’s Championship rivals Sheffield United, admits he takes great pride in seeing the way in which the 23-year-old Liverpudlian has progressed since breaking away from Elland Road.

“I don’t want to take credit for it, but one of the boys who was at Leeds was probably one of the best trainers that I’ve seen in training, and he just never got a look in for whatever reason,” Bamford told ITV Calendar.

“He’s now on fire, Joffy Gelhardt. I used to try and help him as much as I could because I could see that he had the potential to be really good.

“So things like that, and then that almost gives you a little bit of a sense of pride that the fact that you see them doing well when you’ve tried to help them, it’s almost like it pays off, it’s worth it.”
