Ole Gunnar Solskjaer linked with a surprise route back into management

April 7, 2023

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the shortlist for a managerial job, which could see a return to the dugout for the first time since he left Manchester United.

United legend Solskjaer was at risk of damaging his reputation inside Old Trafford during his near three year stint as manager of the team.

The Norwegian took over from Jose Mourinho in December 2018, initially on an interim basis, and his impressive initial spell earned him the job.

Beating PSG in the Champions League, a game that Gianluigi Buffon still considers the biggest regret of his career, earned him the chance to stay on.

However, by the time he left the job in November 2021, following a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Watford, it felt like his time at the club had run its course.

Fans can now remember the good times of him as a player, scoring the Treble winning goal back in 1999, singing his name from the terraces, despite rumours he actually supported Liverpool.

Despite that relative failure whilst in charge at Old Trafford, and the near 18 month absence from management since, he could be on the verge of getting a new job.

According to Belgian football journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the former Molde boss is on a three man shortlist to replace Scott Parker as manager of Club Brugge.

The Belgian side have had a weird season, having appointed Carl Hoefkens last July, after Alfred Schreuder left for Ajax, once Erik ten Hag had become Solskjaer’s long term replacement at United.

Hoefkens led Brugge into the Champions League knockout stages, after they’d won the league under Schreuder the previous season.

However, he was sacked in December, with the team struggling in the league, and replaced by Parker, who had been let go by Bournemouth earlier in the campaign.

The former Fulham boss only lasted from December to March and was sacked following their 5-1 loss in the Champions League to Benfica, after winning just two games in 12.

Solskjaer is battling with former Bayern Munich assistant Dino Toppmoller, who left the club when Julian Nagelsmann was sacked last month.

Former Celtic manager Ronny Deila is the other man being considered, with his future at Standard Liege in doubt over transfer policy.
