Newcastle transfer news: Tammy Abraham is on Eddie Howe’s ‘radar’

March 17, 2023

Newcastle United are looking for attacking reinforcements this summer, and journalist Ben Jacobs believes Roma’s Tammy Abraham is an option.

The CBS reporter has spoke to NUFC Matters on YouTube about who Newcastle could target during the summer, and Abraham was a name he brought up as someone Eddie Howe is looking at.

There could be major changes at St James’ Park this summer, especially if the Magpies qualify for Europe. Howe will need a squad that is capable of competing on multiple fronts, and a big area of concern is the attack.

Newcastle have struggled for goals at times this season. Callum Wilson has not been firing since the World Cup, while Alexander Isak has endured an injury-ridden first season on Tyneside.

He is 23-years-old and has a long Newcastle future ahead of him, but Wilson is at the opposite end of his career. He is now 31, and Jacobs has hinted that Toon officials could replace the number nine this summer.

Ben Jacobs says Newcastle are keen on Tammy Abraham
Speaking on NUFC Matters, Jacobs admitted that Abraham is back on Newcastle’s radar ahead of next season.

“Callum Wilson doesn’t have tons of seasons ahead of him, so maybe it’s that Newcastle do go in for a more traditional number nine and [Dusan] Vlahovic would fall into that category, and they’ve also looked at Tammy Abraham as well without really advancing anything,” he said.

“He’s been on their radar as well and I think Abraham would be quite open to coming and playing back in the Premier League sooner rather than later.”

Abraham was told to reject Toon transfer in 2017
Newcastle and Abraham are no strangers to one another. In fact, he is someone who the Magpies have tried very hard to sign in the past.

Back in 2017, a young Abraham was set for a loan move away from Chelsea, and Rafa Benitez wanted to bring him to St James’ Park after securing promotion back to the Premier League.

He was desperate to sign the striker, but did not get his wish. The then 19-year-old was advised by Chelsea to turn down Newcastle’s advances, as they had concerns over off-field distractions on Tyneside. In short, they were worried he would be out partying all the time.

Abraham would join Swansea instead, where he scored five Premier League goals.

The striker has experienced highs and lows at Roma
The 25-year-old is now plying his trade in Italy, lining up for Jose Mourinho’s Roma. After a blistering start to life in Serie A, Abraham’s form has dipped.

He scored 27 times in his debut year, but this season has been much tougher. Abraham only has seven goals so far, while his form saw him miss out on the England World Cup squad.

Jacobs believes he is keen on a return to the Premier League, and has pondered that Newcastle could offer him that. However, it would be a big surprise if Abraham arrives in the North East this summer.
