Newcastle players on track for cash injection very soon
Qualifying for the Champions League will be an incredible achievement for this group of Newcastle United players, and it will also boost their bank balances.
Newcastle took a giant step towards finishing in the top four on Sunday, beating Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 at St James’ Park. It was an annihilation from the Magpies, who blew Spurs away with five goals in the opening 21 minutes.
Co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi celebrated with every Toon player after the final whistle, and the win means Newcastle are now six points clear of Spurs with a game in hand. Eddie Howe’s side are now very much in control of their own destiny.
Champions League football is surely on the horizon, and that will give some Newcastle players a nice cash injection heading into next season.
Newcastle players braced for potential Champions League bonus
According to the Athletic, multiple Newcastle players will receive pay rises if the club qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League. The players who will see their wages increase will likely be anyone who has joined the club or signed a new contract since the takeover in October 2021.
There will also be a team-wide influx of cash, due to the bonus sheet that was signed at the start of the season. That included rewards for achieving milestones such as qualifying for Europe – which Newcastle now look certain to do, no matter which competition it is for.
It is extra incentive for the Toon players to do well – although they are already paid pretty handsomely. But it is good to see their success being rewarded, after years of bonus drama under Mike Ashley. There were a couple of instances when it caused issues behind the scenes during his ownership.
But the new owners want to reward success, and that is what is coming Newcastle United’s way. Champions League football almost feels inevitable now after Sunday’s win, 20 years since we were last involved in the competition.
