Moretto: Amorim’s relationship with some key’ Milan players ‘not exactly idyllic’

September 18, 2026

Matteo Moretto has suggested that Ruben Amorim already has a relationship with some of the AC Milan leaders that is not exactly great.

Milan’s first defeat of the season came in their fifth game on Wednesday night, a 2-0 loss at home to Benfica in the first round of their Europa League campaign. Yet, what has followed has been an overwhelmingly negative narrative surrounded Amorim.

Admittedly, some of his comments in the media have raised eyebrows as he seemed to contradict himself regarding the state of his squad, while also implying he might not get the time he needed to ‘help’ Milan. However, the focus has to be going into the break with a win to quieten the noise.

‘Supported by Cardinale’
Matteo Moretto – speaking in a video on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel – took stock of the situation surrounding the Milan coach. His words were relayed by MilanNews.

“There are several doubts about Amorim. It’s surprising that he’s constantly changing his starting XI, and that the team isn’t performing as well in the first 45 minutes as they did in the closing stages,” he began.

“Against Juventus, Milan showed certain signs in the second half, against Lazio they recovered in the second half, but this didn’t happen against Benfica, and Milan lost in the Europa League. The first grumbles, the first boos.

“It’s true that Amorim’s relationship with some key players isn’t exactly idyllic, but he has eight points in four league games and is a coach chosen by Gerry Cardinale, defended by Gerry Cardinale, and who continues to be supported by Cardinale.

“There’s a good understanding, harmony, and a desire to move forward between Amorim and the owners. Results are needed, and the team needs to respond in a certain way on the pitch.

“But the fact that Milan signed Amorim to a contract until 2029, with an option until 2030 – a significant contract, worth €4-5 million a year – also suggests how Milan has built a project around him, with a transfer window always shared with the club.

“So far, the signals we’re receiving are signs of confidence, signs that Cardinale, Milan, and the club are behind their coach. We’ll have to see how the next results pan out, but Milan is certainly united and wants to get results starting with the next match against Lecce.”
