Modrić still waiting for new contract at Real Madrid – his performances had earned him a new contract – Ancelotti
Ancelotti is not counting on Modrić for Sunday’s match, and for the first time he reveals what Real intends to do with the Croatian.
The captain of the Croatian national team, Luka Modrić, is talking to Real Madrid about extending his contract, which expires in four months, and the two sides will make an adequate decision, Real’s coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Saturday.
“I don’t consider renewing the contract with Modrić a big problem. He will do what he wants,” Ancelotti said at a press conference in Madrid ahead of the league match with Betis.
Modrić, at 37 years old is the oldest footballer at the European Champion Real Madrid, and he is not on the list of players who will play against Betis on Sunday. Due to five accumulated yellow cards in the previous part of the championship, the midfielder has to miss the next game.
Modrić said last month that he wants to continue playing at the Santiago Bernabeu even after his current contract expires on June 30. At the “Royal Club”, where he has been playing since the summer of 2012, he won 22 trophies.
Ancelotti said last month that his performances had earned him a new contract.
Real Madrid said in December that at the end of the season, they will decide on the extension of the cooperation, which “will depend on the wishes of the players and the form in which they will be”. The club also wants to see how the team’s result will be at the end of the season.
Real Madrid signed Modrić to a one-year contract in June 2022, which was the latest extension.
