Mbappe wants to represent France in Paris Olympics, expects future to be decided before Euros

March 23, 2024

French captain Kylian Mbappe expressed his willingness to represent his country at the Paris Olympics this summer, although it will be on a collision course with Spanish club Real Madrid which he is estimated to join after his contract with Paris St Germain (PSG) expires in late June.

La Liga giant Real, who have been at the forefront of chasing the World Cup winner, emailed the French Football Federation that they will not release their players for the Games, including Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga whom Mbappe will potentially join.

The Olympic football competition is typically an Under-23 tournament, though only three players over the age limit allowed in each squad.

Mbappe, 25, confirmed his willingness to fulfill his obligation to the French side in both Euro 2024 and the Paris Olympics, provided he is allowed to be available for selection.

“I have always had the same ambition. I have always said that I wanted to go [to the Olympics] but it doesn’t depend on me,” Mbappe said on Friday.

“I can’t say anything because no one has told me anything. If I can’t do the Olympics so be it … When I say no one has told me anything, I am talking about PSG. I am under contract with PSG and they haven’t said anything [about the Olympics]. We haven’t discussed it,” he added.

The Olympics football tournament will be played from July 24 to August 9, and it’s unclear if it will overlap with the 2024/25 La Liga schedule yet to be released.

Last month, Mbappe announced that he will leave Ligue 1 leaders PSG this summer after seven years and five French titles. He has not officially announced joining Real, but expects to clarify his next move before Euro 2024 which starts in mid-June.
