Man Utd begrudgingly let coach Erik ten Hag liked leave to set youngest manager record
Eric Ramsay is no longer at Manchester United, as the highly-rated coach has left Old Trafford to become the youngest head coach in MLS history at Minnesota United
One of Erik ten Hag’s top coaches, Eric Ramsay, has officially left Manchester United to become the new coach of MLS side Minnesota United.
Minnesota confirmed on Monday with a post on X: “The club has announced Eric Ramsay as the second head coach in Minnesota United’s Major League Soccer history. Ramsay joins the club from Manchester United, where he served as a first-team coach under current manager Erik ten Hag.”
The 32-year-old was one of the highest rated coaches at United, handing the Red Devils and new billionaire investor Jim Ratcliffe a major blow. Ramsay had already received interest from Swansea and was offered a managerial role at Blackpool within the last two months, something he turned down after Ten Hag expressed his desire for him to stay.
United claimed they would be very sad to see Ramsay go but wouldn’t stand in his way, and Minnesota have finally turned his head. Ramsay is now the youngest head coach in MLS history, but leaves United just days before they face rivals Manchester City in the Premier League.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining a club with such a strong football culture, a fanatic fan base and a brilliant infrastructure,” said Ramsay. “I’ve spoken to a lot of the club’s staff throughout the process and you can’t help but feel everyone’s passion for moving the club forward.
“There is a really exciting pathway for the future of the club and I’m looking forward to playing my role in realizing that vision. I thank the club for putting its faith in me and I hope it’s the start of another successful period for everyone connected with Minnesota United.”
Ramsay was identified as the top target for Minnesota after an “extensive search” by the club for their new manager. The MLS side were keen on getting the right person for the job, they started the 2024 season – which started for Minnesota on Saturday – without a head coach in place.
