Lothar Matthäus expects Bayern Munich to pip Borussia Dortmund for the Bundesliga title

May 16, 2023

Lothar Matthäus is expecting Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga title this season despite Borussia Dortmund’s excellent comeback in the second half of the season.

It is crunch time in the 2022/23 Bundesliga season and the title race is all set to go down to the wire. Just one point separates Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga standings, and it is looking increasingly likely that the title race will be decided on the final day of the season.

Bayern have the upper hand in the title race at the moment, and Lothar Matthäus believes that the defending champions will retain the Bundesliga crown this season. In his column for Sky Sport, the former Germany captain wrote:

“I stand by my belief that Bayern Munich will be German champions. Bayern are familiar with these situations, have won the last three games and will also fight hard in the next two games.”

“I believe that both Bayern and Dortmund will play out draws this weekend and the decision will be made on the last matchday, but after that FC Bayern will win the trophy.”

Matthäus also feels that Borussia Dortmund would be worthy winners if they manage to pip Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title this season.

“Dortmund have also done really well for the most part in recent weeks and months and rightly deserve a lot of praise for their superb performances this season. If they are rewarded with the title in the end, they would deserve it.”

For Borussia Dortmund to win the Bundesliga title this season, they will need Bayern Munich to drop points in one of their remaining two games.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will go up against third placed RB Leipzig this weekend in a fixture that could potentially alter the outcome of the title race. Borussia Dortmund will be desperately hoping for a favour from former head coach Marco Rose on Saturday. The Black and Yellows will then travel to FC Augsburg on Sunday, in what will be another tricky test of their title credentials.

A trip to Köln awaits Bayern on the final day of the season, while Borussia Dortmund will be at home to Mainz 05.
