Liverpool weigh up Roberto De Zerbi appointment
It has been a disappointing season for the Reds so far. And they could miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification. Liverpool crashed to a 5-2 defeat in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 against Real Madrid as well. And it seems that their European adventure could be over for the season.
Liverpool came close to winning the quadruple last season. But their form has fallen off a cliff this year. It seems that a change could be on the cards at Anfield in the summer. And it remains to be seen whether Fenway Sports Group are prepared to part ways with Jurgen Klopp and bring in a quality alternative.
Roberto De Zerbi has proven himself in the Premier League with Brighton, with the Seagulls currently seventh in the table. The 43-year-old could prove to be an excellent appointment for Liverpool. However, the club hierarchy will have to back him in the transfer market. And the Liverpool squad is in desperate need of a rebuild.
While De Zerbi remains a quality manager, he cannot be expected to perform miracles at the Merseyside club and Liverpool must bring in better players in the summer. On the other hand, it would be quite surprising if the club hierarchy decided to give up on Klopp after one poor season.
The German has been exceptional since arriving at Liverpool, and he has helped them win every single trophy at the club level. Furthermore, Liverpool have played some of their best football in the modern era under his management. And Klopp has firmly established himself as a legend of the club and a fan favourite.
The Liverpool fans are unlikely to be happy if FSG decided to replace him at the end of the season. The German is certainly a world-class manager who can turn things around at Anfield with adequate help for transfers.
Ideally, the Reds should look to persist with Klopp and back him significantly in the transfer market at the end of the season. With the right signings, he could transform Liverpool into Premier League title contenders once again. Meawhile, De Zerbi has also courted interest from Tottenham amid uncertainties surrounding Antonio Conte.
