Liverpool fans set off fireworks outside Real Madrid’s hotel at 2am ahead of Champions League clash
Liverpool fans have tried to disturb Real Madrid players by setting off fireworks outside their hotel in the early hours.
The two giants of European football meet in a repeat of last season’s final in Paris on Tuesday night, this time in the round of 16 first leg at Anfield.
It’s a huge clash and some Liverpool fans are doing their best to ensure the holders are not at full capacity for the game.
Reds supporters have found where Los Blancos are staying in the city for their visit and proceeded to go pyro crazy outside the Innside Liverpool Hotel on the Albert Dock.
El Partidazo de COPE posted footage of the lengthy fireworks’ display at 2am in the morning, with the sky lit up from the illuminations.
Many sets of fans have utilised these tactics the night before a big game, with Everton supporters giving it a go when Southampton came to town last month.
They’ve also done it to Chelsea, while Marseille fans attempted to give Spurs a sleepless night back in November.
As for Liverpool, they too have previous for doing it to Spanish sides. In 2019, they set off rockets and firecrackers outside Barcelona’s hotel before Jurgen Klopp’s side battered the Blaugrana 4-0 and reached the Champions League final after a stunning second leg semi-final comeback.
One clip of the bangs featured a fan saying, “wake up call for Mr Messi” at the end, though apparently no noise complaints were filed.
Real have been unsettled by Ajax fans before and their antics led to four of their ultras being arrested by Dutch police.
Liverpool have returned to form with two wins on the trot after a dismal start to 2023, while Real haven’t been at their best this term and are currently eight points behind Barcelona in La Liga.
“I am really happy we play it now. Four weeks ago it would have been different,” Liverpool boss Klopp said on the timing of the clash.
“Life is all about timing. Maybe we found our feet in time. Hopefully we can build on that, but now we need to play two super games.”
