Lennon Miller Serie A rise continues as Scotland World Cup hopeful racks up eye-catching Udinese stat
Former Motherwell captain now making his mark in Italian football
Lennon Miller continued his recent rise in Serie A with another start for Udinese in a 3-1 win at Hellas Verona on Monday night.
The Scotland midfielder has had to be patient in his first season in Italian football, with limited game time to begin with following his club-record £4.75million transfer from Motherwell last summer.
The 19-year-old made only five substitute appearances in Serie A before the end of the year, with his only start coming in the Coppa Italia in September, which he marked with his first goal for Udinese in a 2-1 win over Palermo.
However, things have started moving in the right direction for Miller since the beginning of 2026 with head coach Kosta Runjaić bringing the youngster off the bench at half-time in the 1-0 defeat at Como on January 3 before handing him his first league start in the 3-1 win at Torino four days later, where he completed 80 minutes.
Miller has gone on to start three of the his side’s last four matches in Serie A – racking up 75 minutes in the 2-2 draw with Pisa on January 10 before lasting 77 minutes against Verona on Monday night as Udinese solidified 10th place in the table.
In between, the former Fir Park captain also made another half-time appearance off the bench in the 1-0 defeat to league leaders Inter Milan last weekend.
It means Miller has yet to taste defeat across four starts for Udinese in league and cup – a record he will hope to maintain next Monday night when third-placed Roma visit Stadio Friuli on Serie A business.
Miller is hoping to secure his place in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad ahead of the World Cup this summer. The former Under-21 international was called into the senior set-up for the first time in March last year and has since won four caps.
He made his debut as a substitute in a friendly against Iceland in June before making his first international start against Leichtenstein. He also appeared twice off the bench during the World Cup qualification campaign but was forced to withdraw from the November camp due to injury.
Elsewhere in Serie A this weekend, Lewis Ferguson scored his first goal of the season for Bologna but was on the losing side in a 3-2 defeat at Genoa.
Scott McTominay and Napoli suffered a setback in their bid to retain the scudetto, going down 3-0 at Juventus as Billy Gilmour again missed out through injury.
Che Adams endured a nightmare weekend as his Torino side suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Como, but there was joy for Josh Doig, who helped Sassuolo to a 1-0 win over Cremonese.
