Leicester City Face Disadvantage In Jeremy Monga Replacement Chase
Leicester City are believed to be a fringe contender in the six-club race to sign Brighton and Hove Albion prospect Tommy Watson.
The Seagulls are looking to hand the youngster yet another loan spell away from the Amex as competition for places in Fabian Hurzeler’s first team remains fierce.
Foxes Eye Watson Switch
Watson is the subject of a transfer war this summer, with six clubs across England’s top three divisions all battling it out to try and secure the services of the 20-year-old.
Having represented Sunderland in a breakthrough season, which was capped off by his goal at Wembley that sent the Black Cats into the Premier League, Brighton poached the prospect and handed him irregular minutes across the first half of last season.
However, with Kaoru Mitoma, Yankuba Minteh and the later emergence of Maxim De Cuyper as a more advanced option, a loan was sanctioned, with Championship promotion hopefuls Millwall taking Watson on for the remainder of the campaign.
Leicester City are in need of new wingers following the sale of Jeremy Monga to Manchester City, alongside expected departures for both Abdul Fatawu and Stephy Mavididi following their relegation to League One.
Russell Martin’s side have their work cut out, with a move to the Championship viewed as a more likely option with reported interest from West Ham United, Derby County, West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End.
One Premier League side are also purported to be keen on a deal in newly-promoted Hull City, who are seeking a replacement for Kyle Joseph after his sale to Middlesbrough earlier in the week.
Foxes May Be More Enticing Option
While they have their work cut out for them in trying to secure a deal due to their league disadvantage, Leicester City may surely be a more promising destination for Tommy Watson compared to others.
The 20-year-old is yet to truly have a full campaign of regular action under his belt, with his debut season at Sunderland seeing him largely act as a late-game supersub in place of Romaine Mundle, Wilson Isidor and others.
With Leicester now facing a clearout, Russell Martin can surely promise him a full season of regular action, in what is shaping up to be a very competitive division with plenty of teams having a shot at a place in the Championship.
