Lazio Mull Stunning Reunion with High-Profile Coach
Even though Maurizio Sarri threatened to quit following the latest loss against Salernitana, it doesn’t look like there’ll be changes on the Lazio bench in the near future. But it’s very possible the coach and the club will part ways at the end of the season if the results aren’t satisfactory.
According to Il Messaggero, president Claudio Lotito has no intention of firing the gaffer primarily for economic reasons. If he pulled the trigger, he’d have to pay €10M till 2025.
If Sarri didn’t turn the Lazio campaign around, the parties could agree to a contract resolution come June. The Biancocelesti have started considering other bosses. Lionel Scaloni is one of their favorite early candidates, Calciomercato informs. He recently voiced his doubts about continuing on the Argentina bench.
The 2022 World Cup champion is familiar with the club and Serie A. He had two separate stints in the Italian capital between 2007 and 2013 and also spent a couple of seasons at Atalanta in the twilight of his career.
Our Take on Lazio, Sarri, and Scaloni
A midseason dismissal is unlikely unless things really go south, and they are not there yet. However, the gaffer and the club will indeed be at a critical juncture next summer. They’ll have to either extend the contract or split. The former defender would be an elite replacement, but he’d have to leave La Seleccion, which is a stretch despite his recent remarks.
