Kylian Mbappe could join an exclusive club TONIGHT against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League

May 1, 2024

Kylian Mbappe will have the opportunity to join an immortal troop of footballers tonight.

Paris Saint-Germain could take an almighty stride towards their second Champions League final when they face Borussia Dortmund in Germany at 8pm.

Mbappe has 43 goals and 10 assists this season and if he can inspire PSG to a Treble, that will solidify any clamour to give him a Ballon d’Or.

Triumph in Europe would mark a poignant ending to his time in Paris before he hops on a bus and journeys to Real Madrid in the summer.

While all those grand dreams will have to wait, there is something he can achieve tonight.

If Mbappe scores twice, he will become the 11th player to score 50 goals in the Champions League.

It would also make him the third-fastest player to reach this landmark.

Ruud van Nistelrooy did it in 62 and Lionel Messi in 66, and Mbappe would deserve some celebratory croissants if he manages it in 72.

So, who else has scored 50 times or more in the Champions League?

Well, Cristiano Ronaldo is breathing clean air out in front with 141, with Messi lagging behind on 129.

In 2013/14 Ronaldo struck 17 times – only two goals off being able to be in the top 100 scorers independent of his other seasons.

The next man along is Robert Lewandowski on 94, underlining how dominant and consistent the best two players of this century have been.

Closely behind Lewandowski is Karim Benzema on 90, with Raul on 71 and Van Nistelrooy on 60.

Mbappe could realistically surpass some players next season – Andriy Shevchenko is on 59, Thomas Muller is on 54, and Thierry Henry managed 51.

If Mbappe scores twice tonight, he will reach the level of Filippo Inzaghe – honourable company in a tribe of elites.

While PSG have been known to collapse on the big stage, they have stepped up this campaign.

A 4-1 win over Barcelona in April secured a dramatic comeback – some payback for what Barca did to them in 2017 – and Mbappe was at the forefront of the revival, scoring twice.
