John Terry sends one word message to £17m Chelsea target after news last night

October 31, 2023

Chelsea target and Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez had some exciting news last night at the 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Emiliano Martinez was crowned the winner of this year’s prestigious Yashin Trophy, which is awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper.

The 31-year-old keeper also finished 15th in the overall Ballon d’or ranking, with Lionel Messi winning the individual prize for the eighth time.

He’s gone from strength to strength as a colossus in Villa’s net. The World Cup winner is a compete star for Argentina’s national team, too.

Chelsea legend John Terry previously worked with Martinez during his time as assistant manager at Villa Park.

The £120,000-a-week goalkeeper (Spotrac) uploaded an Instagram post yesterday celebrating his individual success.

Chelsea received plenty of transfer links to Aston Villa’s £17million gloveman (BBC) in the most recent summer window.

Journalist Simon Phillips reported via his Substack back in June that some people inside Chelsea were urging the club to go and sign Martinez in the summer.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT reported that Chelsea had Martinez in their sights as a transfer target.

Instead, the Blues signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton in the summer to become their new first-choice goalkeeper.

In our view, the Blues may have been safer spending big and investing on a world-class star in-between the sticks.

If you’re looking at two areas of the pitch that Chelsea could do with significantly strengthening still, we reckon most fans would pick out the goalkeeper and striker position.

We’ve seen time and time again you need a great spine to be successful!

Sanchez, 25, is beginning to come under pressure from supporters for a handful of errors creeping into his game. Hopefully, the Spanish keeper has the personality to stick it out and come good.
