John Terry claims his best game for Chelsea was Champions League final he didn’t play in
John Terry has joked the best game he ever played for Chelsea was the game he didn’t play in – the Blues’ 2012 Champions league final win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena
John Terry has admitted the best game he ever played for Chelsea was one he didn’t play in – their 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
Bayern were back on top of the world, and they had bulldozed their way to European football’s premier fixture. Chelsea, on the other hand, had been disappointing in the Premier League, and their only route back into the Champions League was to win the whole thing.
However, that season’s final was held at the Allianz Arena – Bayern’s home ground. It took a heart-stopping 90th-minute equaliser from Didier Drogba to send the game to extra time, and it was the Ivorian who converted Chelsea’s winning spot-kick.
However, Terry didn’t play in the game – he was suspended for the clash – but it didn’t stop the Chelsea star from coming out onto the pitch in full kit after the whistle to celebrate.
And speaking on Stephen Hendry’s Cue Tips, Terry revealed: “It’s funny, a lot of people say to me, what’s your best game for Chelsea? It would be the 2012 Champions League final when I didn’t play… bizarre isn’t it!
“I suppose because of the hurt of it all, and it just meant so much.”
For Terry, the Champions League final, in 2012, was his final hurdle – having come so close to claiming the trophy in 2008.
In an all-English final, Chelsea had clashed with Manchester United in the Moscow rain. That final had also gone to penalties, and Terry had stepped up for the Blues, only to slip during his run-up – causing him to balloon the ball over the bar.
Terry was subsequently subject to ridicule from opposition fans until he finally got his second shot at the gold four years later against Bayern.
