Jamie Carragher makes Chelsea v Borussia Dortmund prediction ahead of Champions League decider

March 7, 2023

The Blues will attempt to overturn a one-goal deficit in their last-16 tie against Dortmund on Tuesday night.

Chelsea have endured a dismal run under Potter but clinched a much-needed 1-0 victory over Premier League rivals Leeds United at the weekend.

The Blues are looking to register back-to-back wins for the first time since October and will need to score at least two goals in a match for the first time since December 27.

Chelsea face a Borussia Dortmund side who are joint-top with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, having won 10 games in a row in all competitions.

Asked for his prediction for the Champions League tie, former Liverpool and England defender Carragher told Sky Sports: ‘It’s a huge game.

‘There was a lot of talk before the Leeds game about the pressure on Graham Potter and him potentially losing his job.

I think from Graham Potter’s point of view, winning that game [against Leeds] probably gives them a bit of breathing space ahead of the Dortmund game.

‘I still expect them to get through, Chelsea. They dominated Dortmund in the first leg. They find themselves behind but I think they were by far the better team so I expect them to go through.’

Winning the Champions League is Chelsea’s only opportunity to win a trophy this season and probably their own chance to qualify for the competition next term as they are 11 points outside the top-four with 13 games remaining.

Speaking ahead of the visit of Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea boss Potter said: ‘We want to make sure it’s tough for Dortmund away from home in the Champions League – and we need our supporters for that.

‘It’s a big game, an exciting game to go to the last eight – it will be a special night at Stamford Bridge.

‘We’ve had some games where we could have scored more than one and we need that performance tomorrow night. We’re playing against a top team, a team that is in a good place with the wins they’ve had.’
