James Maddison pictured on crutches after worrying Tottenham injury as Thomas Frank gives update
Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank delivered a short but telling update on James Maddison following the midfielder’s distressing injury against Newcastle United.
The 28-year-old came on for the final 15 minutes of Sunday’s 1-1 friendly draw in South Korea, but his race was run after just 11 minutes owing to a serious-looking knee problem.
Maddison dropped to the turf clutching his right knee after an apparent awkward step, and the former Leicester City man covered his face with his hands as he was stretchered off.
Players from both sides – including the departing Son Heung-min – expressed great concern for Maddison, who also suffered from a moderate knee issue towards the end of last season, missing the Europa League final as a result.
Spurs are unlikely to learn the full extent of Maddison’s injury for a couple of days, but there are already well-founded fears that the England international could be sidelined for a lengthy period, as he was seen making his way through the mixed zone on crutches after the game.
