Ivan Toney shares how he actually feels about Newcastle now, after they let him go

August 21, 2023

Ivan Toney was signed by Newcastle United from Northampton Town as the next big thing in 2015 but things didn’t pan out as hoped.

Newcastle made the move to bring in Ivan Toney from Northampton after the then 19-year-old racked up 13 goals in 60 appearances for his hometown club.

Unfortunately for Toney things just never clicked for him at Newcastle and after just three years comprising of six loan spells and only two senior appearances, the forward was sold to Peterborough an undisclosed fee.

Since signing for Brentford Toney has become a top striker

Then in 2020 Brentford signed Toney from Peterborough for a fee that could reach £10million according to Sporting Life. Since arriving at Brentford Toney has gone from strength to strength, proving that he has what it takes to be a top Premier League striker and even getting a nod for England.

However, the bubble burt recently when Toney was caught up in a betting scandal which landed him an eight month ban from football. Now Toney has spoken to The Diary Of A CEO podcast about his career and what he feels about Newcastle.

“Newcastle are a great club, they have had some great players and are doing very well at the moment,” said Toney.

“But I feel like I didn’t really have a chance in the first team to prove if I was good enough. I feel personally, anyway.

Newcastle fans will often wonder what could have been with Toney

“At the time Newcastle were fighting to stay in the Premier League, when Rafa Benitez first came in, so it was kind of understandable they wanted these players to keep them up.

“You can’t put so much responsibility on young players to keep you up, but I feel like the following season, it was like could I get a sniff and then he brought his own players in and did his own kind of thing, which is just football.”

Looking back now and seeing what a player Toney became it is a shame Newcastle didn’t give him more of an opportunity, but at the same time, if he’d stayed, he may not have developed into the player he is now.
