How Atletico Madrid fared in final match before Celtic Champions League return clash

November 4, 2023

Atletico Madrid go into their Champions League return clash with Celtic next week off the back of disappointing 2-1 defeat to Las Palmas.

The La Liga sides faced off on Friday night with Atletico looking for their ninth win in 11 league games this season, a feat that would have put them top of the league before their nearby rivals Real Madrid and Girona play this weekend. But Diego Simeone’s side stumbled to a poor loss away from home, as Las Palmas celebrated their first home triumph over Atletico since 1987.

Kirian Rodriguez and Benito Ramirez del Toro had Las Palmas two up after 75 minutes, but the deadly Alvaro Morata struck back to set up a squeaky bum time finish. But the hosts managed to hold out against Antoine Griezmann and the rest as their win takes them up to ninth in La Liga.

On the other hand, it could mean Simeone’s charges will be fired up to right their wrongs against Celts, who are aiming for their first victory in Champions League Group E this season.
