HARRY MAGUIRE TOLD WHY HE SHOULD PICK WEST HAM UNITED OVER TOTTENHAM

June 7, 2023

Shaka Hislop thinks Harry Maguire should leave Manchester United and secure a transfer to West Ham United and not the interested party, Tottenham Hotspur.

The former West Ham United goalkeeper thinks those at the London Stadium are ‘more understanding’ than Tottenham fans and that’s what Harry Maguire needs right now in order to pick up his career again, as he told ESPN.

Whenever Maguire is playing, whether for Manchester United or England, there is always this drama and noise around him and, as a result, Hislop thinks that the error-prone centre-back needs fans that would ‘accept some of his dips’.

There is every chance that Maguire heads for the exit door this summer because he has become a back-up option under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford – it is claimed that he wants to leave amid Tottenham and Aston Villa’s interest in him.

The 30-year-old has gone backwards on the Premier League stage, but despite that, he is still getting picked by Gareth Southgate for England.

But for how long will that last with Euro 2024 around the corner? Either way, with his career up in the air, Hislop explained why a move to West Ham is better than Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs.

“I understand if Harry Maguire wants to go to Spurs, I do,” said Hislop. “I don’t think it’s the right move. I don’t think it’s the right fit.

“I think, right now, there is an unrealistic sense of expectation about who they are from Spurs fans. I don’t think Harry Maguire serves well at all.

“I will use the example, as a former West Ham player, I would have him at West Ham. The West Ham fans are more understanding of your ups and downs, if you just keep showing up. I think that’s what Harry Maguire needs right now. A good run in the team. A fan base that would accept some of the dips, as long as you keep showing up and continue to get better. That’s who West Ham are.

“I am not sure that Spurs fans are at all like that and will allow him to play his way back into the England defender that we know.”

Maguire needs to leave Manchester United
With an £80 million transfer fee (BBC Sport) over his head, added to the fact that he has been Manchester United’s captain, life has become tougher and tougher for Maguire at Old Trafford.

It’s clear that he needs to head for the exit door and start a new chapter in his life.

If he were to get a club like West Ham or Tottenham, then he would be lucky because that’s still a seriously high level for a player whose form has dipped to really low levels in recent years.
