Gregor Kobel: Edin Terzic’s half-time tweaks made the difference in Union Berlin win

October 8, 2023

Borussia Dortmund managed to keep their winning run going in the Bundesliga on Saturday, as they came from behind to defeat Union Berlin 4-2. After a lacklustre first-half display, the Black and Yellows turned on the style and scored three unanswered goals to claim the three points.

The comeback win once again showed Borussia Dortmund’s ability to grind out results from less than ideal situations. And Gregor Kobel is crediting Edin Terzic for sparking his team’s turnaround against Union Berlin.

“We played a great game in the second half and performed really well. The coach rightly turned up the heat a bit in the dressing room at the break.”

“Before then, it was not our best performance. At half-time, he switched to a three-man backline so that we would have an advantage in the build-up play. That worked really well with the centre-backs playing wider.”

“And then the stadium immediately joined in and provided additional energy. The emotions in the stands gave us a push. That’s a big plus.”

Terzic’s words certainly had the desired effect, as Nico Schlotterbeck brought Borussia Dortmund back on level terms in the 49th minute. Half-time substitute Julian Brandt then gave BVB the lead just five minutes later, before Julian Ryerson scored to make sure of the win.

The win over Union Berlin means that Borussia Dortmund will go into the international break with five wins and two draws from their opening seven games in the Bundesliga. A number of crunch matches lie in store for BVB after the international break. And the hope will be that this momentum can continue in the coming weeks to spark their charge for the Bundesliga tile.
