Girona boss Michel makes ‘very complicated’ Liverpool admission and penalty ‘reality’ claim

December 11, 2024

Girona manager Michel spoke after Liverpool beat his side 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League

Girona manager Michel had few complaints with the decisive penalty decision that saw Liverpool beat his side on Tuesday night as he hailed the Reds as ‘the best team in the Champions League’. Mohamed Salah scored from the spot in the second half after Donny van de Beek was adjudged to have fouled Luis Diaz.

The La Liga outfit impressed for the majority against Liverpool as Arne Slot was left unimpressed with his own side’s performance. On more than one occasion, they had the returning Alisson Becker to thank for stopping Girona from scoring.

And Michel was left to rue his own side’s missed opportunities as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Slot’s men.

“I think we played well, against the best team in the Champions League,” he said. “Beyond the result, I think the fans should be proud of the players.

“Today they were able to adjust their defence against an opponent with great players. The data is what it is, and there is nothing more.

“Today we had chances to score, but we couldn’t. In the first half we played well. Taking the ball away from Liverpool is very complicated.

“We had the possibility of making transitions with the ball and generating scoring chances. I am very happy for that. If we are able to score a goal, every match changes.”
