Former French Forward Makes a Case Why Messi Deserves Major Blame for PSG’s Champions League Exit vs. Bayern Munich
Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League campaign came to an end at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Bayern Munich clinched a 3-0 aggregate win over PSG to advance to the quarterfinals of the competition.
Multiple PSG players have since been singled out for their sluggish performances against Bayern Munich, including Messi. The Argentine forward failed to record a single goal contribution in the Champions League knockout stage for the second straight year.
RMC Sport’s Jerome Rothen has been one of Messi’s most vocal critics, and during a recent appearance on the “After Foot” program, he took some time to note that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner deserves blame for PSG’s early Champions League exit.
“He is unfit for the high level with this state of mind,” Rothen said. “Do you think it’s normal to see Messi like that? I blame him, he was moved in all the duels.”
Messi logged 74 touches in PSG’s Champions League second leg defeat to the reigning Bundesliga champions, and he created three goal-scoring chances and tallied one shot on target in the contest.
Overall, Messi has chipped in with nine goals and four assists in 14 total appearances with PSG in Champions League play.
