Former Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels scores own goal in 5-1 defeat on AS Roma debut
Mats Hummels finally made his long-awaited debut for AS Roma on Sunday evening, but could not prevent them from suffering a 5-1 defeat to Fiorentina.
After warming the bench for seven games, Mats Hummels finally got to make his AS Roma debut on Sunday. The veteran centre-back came off the bench with his side 4-1 behind against Fiorentina. Four minutes after coming on, Hummels scored an own goal that sealed a dismal defeat for the Italian capital club.
Mats Hummels has Serie A debut to forget
“Happy that i finally had my Serie A debut and first game for this club. Unhappy about everything else that happened on the pitch yesterday,” Hummels said on Instagram after the game on Sunday.
Roma were second best from the outset and were two goals behind after just 17 minutes. Former Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Manu Koné halved the deficit in the 39th minute, only for Fiorentina two add two more goals either side of half-time. Moise Kean scored a brace for Fiorentina, and Lucas Beltrán and Edoardo Bove were also on target.
Mario Hermoso was then sent off for Roma, which led head coach Ivan Juric to bring on Mats Hummels. But in the 71st minute, the former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich defender headed the ball into his own net after a corner.
It has been a less than ideal start to life in Italy for Hummels, and some reports have even claimed that he could look to leave Roma in January. While it remains to be seen if there is any truth to that rumour, the defender will hope to showcase the quality that he displayed in BVB’s run to the Champions League final.
AS Roma are 11th in the Serie A standings with only two wins from their nine matches so far this season.
