Former Bayern goalkeeper Christian Früchtl moves to Serie A, Bayern “could” retain buyback clause

July 2, 2024

Bayern Munich’s Christian Früchtl was always rated fairly high within the club’s ranks, with the keeper’s reflexes and skills with the ball standout attributes. There were even some shouts that he could replace Manuel Neuer in the long term, but those were few and far between. However, Früchtl suffered some serious setbacks due to an unsuccessful loan at SSV Jahn Regensburg followed by an unfortunate injury the summer he came back to Bayern, scuppering any chance of a move away. Finally, he permanently left Bayern to move to Austria Wien, with the Bavarian giants securing a buy back clause.

Now, after two years in Austria Wien, Lecce’s official twitter account announced that they had signed Christian Früchtl. Going from a club in Austria Wien that played in the Conference League just two seasons ago to a team that tends to fights relegation in the Serie A is a rather interesting move and, more crucially to Bayern, would most likely have meant that the buy back option would be no more.

However, Tobi Altschäffl reports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, that Bayern “could now still retain a clause with his move to Lecce.” That raises some natural next questions. How? What is the amount? Unfortunately, those details were not included in the report. At 24, it remains to be seen if Früchtl can fulfill enough of his potential to move to Bayern. But regardless of if he does, it is good to see him take yet another step in his career.
