FC Augsburg axe coach Enrico Maassen as Bundesliga woes deepen

October 10, 2023

FC Augsburg have parted ways with head coach Enrico Maassen following a disappointing 2-1 loss to newly-promoted Darmstadt.
The Bavarian club made the announcement on Monday, citing the need for “changes to the coaching position” after a series of poor results, including a German Cup exit to third-division Unteraching and just one win in seven Bundesliga outings, which has left Augsburg teetering just above the relegation zone.

“After extensive discussions and evaluation of the sporting situation, FC Augsburg have decided to dismiss coach Enrico Maassen with immediate effect,” the club stated firmly.

Maassen, who had taken the reins in the summer of 2022 after coaching Borussia Dortmund’s reserve team, couldn’t replicate the success he had enjoyed in his previous role. Last season, he had steered Augsburg to a 15th-place finish, narrowly avoiding relegation.

Despite Augsburg’s struggles in recent years, their highest-ever Bundesliga finish came in the 2014/15 season when they achieved a remarkable fifth place. The club had hoped for a resurgence under Maassen’s guidance but ultimately found themselves mired in another difficult campaign.

Tobias Strobl, Augsburg’s under-23 coach, has been entrusted with the interim role. Strobl will need to quickly assess the squad and implement changes to reverse the club’s fortunes.

The decision to remove Maassen makes him the first Bundesliga coach this season to be relieved of his duties, a reflection of the immense pressure that top-flight coaches face in a fiercely competitive league.

The swift dismissal of Maassen underscores the ruthless nature of modern football management. Clubs at the bottom end of the Bundesliga table cannot afford to linger when results take a downturn. The fear of relegation looms large, and Augsburg’s leadership have acted decisively to address their precarious position.

The departure of Maassen marks a pivotal moment for FC Augsburg. They must now navigate the turbulent waters of the Bundesliga with a new leader at the helm.
