Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool are days away from massive transfer

August 23, 2026

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool are just days away from agreeing a massive transfer.

Richard Hughes doesn’t have much time left at Liverpool.

With his expected move to Al Hilal getting closer, the sporting director is now nearing the end of what has been a pretty eventful spell at Anfield.

It has been quite the ride. One minute, Liverpool were celebrating another Premier League title. The next, they were dealing with chaotic transfer windows and watching some of their biggest targets publicly turn them down.

In Hughes’ first summer, it was Martin Zubimendi. In his third, Yan Diomande. His second window was certainly more successful, with Liverpool getting a number of their main targets through the door. The problem is that several of those signings have yet to really justify the money spent on them.

That has only added to the frustration among supporters as Hughes prepares to move on.

Because when you have a sporting director running the club’s recruitment, you want to feel like there is a plan. You want someone who knows exactly what they are looking for, has alternatives lined up and always seems to be one step ahead of the market.

Over the last few weeks, though, it has felt like the complete opposite.

At times, Liverpool have looked like they are throwing darts at a board with the lights switched off and hoping one of them somehow hits the target.

And that is not a particularly reassuring way to run a transfer window.

That is not exactly a great position for Liverpool to be in.

The Premier League season is now just hours away, yet the squad still feels miles away from being settled. There are gaps all over the place and, perhaps most importantly, Iraola still doesn’t have all the tools he needs to implement the football he wants to play.

That surely isn’t how Liverpool expected this summer to look.

Something has to change, and it has to change quickly.

Yet Liverpool are still negotiating over Bradley Barcola. This has been going on for weeks, possibly even months, and there is still no breakthrough.

At this stage, it is starting to feel like a game of who blinks first.

That is a pretty risky game for Liverpool to be playing when Iraola’s squad is already so short on depth.

And even if they get Barcola over the line, that won’t solve everything. Liverpool need another winger who can play on the right, especially with the huge void left by Mohamed Salah.

Ibrahim Mbaye has been mentioned as one possible option, but senior figures at Liverpool have played down the idea that there is anything concrete happening there. For now, the interest appears to be little more than exploratory.

Which brings Liverpool back to the same problem: they need reinforcements, they need them quickly, and the list of realistic options is getting shorter by the day.

Well, according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are at least accelerating one massive transfer.

The transfer guru speaking on his YouTube channel confirmed that Liverpool are continuing their talks with PSG to sign Barcola and that he expects the Reds to accelerate their move in the coming days.

That would suggest given all the negotiations that Liverpool are going to strike an agreement for the French superstar very shortly.
