Ex-England midfielder Dele signs 18-month Como deal.

January 21, 2025

Former England midfielder Dele Alli has joined Italian club Como.

The 28-year-old has spent the past month training with the Serie A side and has signed an initial 18-month contract, with an option based on appearances for a further season.

Dele has been without a club since June when he left Everton, but he carried on training under then manager Sean Dyche before joining Como on trial.

The former Tottenham and MK Dons player has not played since lining up in February 2023 for Turkish side Besiktas on loan.

“The club believes in Dele’s potential and is committed to helping him rediscover his best form,” said Como head coach Cesc Fabregas.

“His experience and leadership qualities will undoubtedly benefit the squad.”

In an emotional interview with Gary Neville in July 2023, Dele revealed he was sexually abused at six years old and dealing drugs aged eight. He also admitted drinking alcohol and taking sleeping pills during his career, but emphasised his desire to return to playing after receiving support for his off-field problems.

“The focus will be on providing Dele with a supportive environment where he can gradually integrate into the squad,” said Como.

“While there will be no immediate performance expectations, the club is confident that he will make a significant contribution both on the pitch and as a mentor to the club’s young talents”.

Como returned to the Italian top flight for the first time in nearly 50 years last summer.

Former Arsenal players Fabregas and Thierry Henry are also minority investors in the club.
