Everton punishment could be watershed moment as Liverpool await Man City FFP verdict

November 21, 2023

Your morning Liverpool headlines for Tuesday, November 21.

Liverpool’s rivalry with Man City takes new twist after Premier League FFP punishment

In the aftermath of Everton’s 10-point deduction handed out for breaching Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules, Liverpool await the verdict of Manchester City’s own 115 charges.

The Blues, who will appeal, were given the biggest punishment in the competition’s history – something that could be viewed as a watershed moment in this country.

On the one hand the league have been seen to have acted decisively in order to prove they do not require independent regulation, whilst Everton feel they are being made an easy example of for their breaches.

With Manchester City currently fighting 115 alleged breaches and Chelsea also under investigation for conduct during Roman Abramovich’s ownership, the Premier League’s action could yet prove to be instructive to what comes next for clubs – whether it be the Reds or their rivals – found to be guilty of financial breaches in future.

Man City points deduction won’t be enough as Liverpool await FFP punishment

With time, Liverpool attentions will turn away from Everton’s recent plight and towards a different sort of Financial Fair Play breach of much more relevance at Anfield.

The biggest points deduction in Premier League history may yet lead to a stronger punishment in the case of Manchester City – something Everton referred to in a less-than-veiled part of their statement.

A points deduction would hand the Reds and others a slight advantage in the present standings, though City’s alleged infringements occurred some time ago. In particular, Liverpool lost out on the league by two points to their rivals in 2013/14, and were beaten in 2016’s League Cup final.

So suggestions of a 30-point deduction for Pep Guardiola’s side simply wouldn’t cut it. Everton being given a third of that for one charge would seem unjust next to City’s 115.
