EUROPA LEAGUE GOALKEEPER ARSENAL EYED BEFORE RAMSDALE DEAL BECOMES HERO WITH THREE PENALTY SAVES

Arsenal were interested in Anatoliy Trubin before signing Aaron Ramsdale – and he has now become a Europa League hero for Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Gunners were looking for their next stopper and eventually settled on Ramsdale, signing him from Sheffield United in 2021.

That move raised a few eyebrows given that Ramsdale had experienced two successive relegations.

Ramsdale has been a star for Arsenal though, justifying Edu’s move to sign him.

Arsenal did look at other goalkeepers during that 2020-21 season though and one of them was Anatoliy Trubin.

Corriere dello Sport reported that Arsenal had joined Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen in watching Trubin ahead of a possible move.

Shakhtar managed to keep hold of their goalkeeper but interest will surely be mounting again soon enough.

Trubin has become Shakhtar’s number one goalkeeper and he was in inspired form on Thursday night.

Shakhtar were 2-1 up from the first leg of their Europa League clash against Rennes but lost the second leg 2-1.

That meant the game went to penalties and that’s where Trubin hit the headlines.

Trubin racked up three penalty saves to send Shakhtar through to face Feyenoord in the last 16.

Trubin also recorded seven saves during the game to keep Shakhtar in the tie and eventually send them through.

The 21-year-old is now a Shakhtar hero after that display and interest is bound to emerge in the coming months.

Arsenal have been watching Shakhtar in recent months having chased Mykhailo Mudryk, so Trubin may well still be on the radar.

It’s also realistic that Arsenal look for another goalkeeper soon enough given that Matt Turner will understandably want first-team action.

Trubin may well be on for Arsenal to keep an eye on – especially after his Europa League heroics.
