Europa League club now hoping to agree deal to sign Leeds United target

January 11, 2024

Full-back is now very much an area of weakness on both sides of the field for Leeds United.

The Whites had looked well stocked at right-back when the window opened but after Djed Spence’s shock return to Tottenham Hotspur, and Luke Ayling’s imminent move to Middlesbrough, they are now looking light.

At the beginning of the month, though, it was left-back which looked the biggest priority, with Daniel Farke even confirming himself that it would be a position Leeds looked at.

Both Sam Byram and Junior Firpo have struggled with injuries this season but so far the only real link to a new left-back has been Hellas Verona’s Josh Doig.

However, Leeds are set to face intense competition regarding a deal for Doig, with it reported yesterday that Europa League side Marseille had made an opening offer. Foot Mercato have now provided a fresh update on the situation.

Marseille hoping to agree Doig Deal
They report that Verona are open to the departure of Doig this month and Marseille are now hopeful of reaching an agreement to sign him, ideally on loan.

Verona, though, would prefer a permanent sale and so it remains to be seen whether they come to an agreement, but interest from a club like Marseille will undoubtedly make it difficult for Leeds.

Leeds themselves are primarily in the market for loan deals this month with chief executive Angus Kinnear having confirmed as such all the way back in September.

Following the aforementioned return of Spence to Spurs, Leeds now have three loan spots open to use but it has very much been a quiet start to the window at Elland Road.

It will be interesting to see whether Leeds do look to bring in both a left-back and right-back before the end of the window, or if they decide to sign a player capable of covering both.
