England stance on Eddie Howe appointment revealed as race set for dramatic U-turn

October 16, 2024

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was a rumoured target following Gareth Southgate’s resignation.

Thomas Tuchel is reportedly on the brink of succeeding Gareth Southgate as England manager.

That news will be welcomed by Newcastle United, who have been braced for and approach from the FA since Southgate’s resignation. Eddie Howe gave ambiguous answers when grilled by reporters about the England job over the summer.

The Toon boss has since distanced himself from the role – insisting he is “happy” at St James’ Park. Interim manager Lee Carsley looked likely to get the job permanently until the recent international break. Watch on Shots! Geordie Journos reflect on Newcastle United takeover – three years on

However, a shock defeat to Greece and unconvincing comments about returning to the under-21s dented his chances in the race. The 50-year-old went as far as to suggest England need a “world-class coach” with a track record of silverware.

“I know I keep saying the same thing,” Carsley said. “My remit was to do six games. (I’m) really happy with the privileged position that I’m in. I’m really enjoying it, I didn’t enjoy it for the last two days, it was hard work, I’m not used to losing in an England team, I don’t take losing very well.

“I think people are always going to try to put their chips on one side. I’m totally in the middle. My bosses have made it totally clear what they need from me. This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies and been there and done it. I’m still on the path to doing that.”

Various sources now claim former Chelsea boss Tuchel is set to take the England job – with an FA press conference booked later today. He reportedly held talks with the St George’s Park hierarchy as Three Lions chiefs ramped up efforts in recent days.

Sky Sports suggest Pep Guardiola was initially contacted but he remains committed to Manchester City. As for Tuchel, he is a free agent, having left his position at Bayern Munich in May.
