€60 million signing explains why he failed at Real Madrid

March 6, 2023

Real Madrid’s transfer policy has undergone a lot of change in recent years. And one of the big reasons behind that is believed to have been their signing of Luka Jovic in 2019, which turned out to be a mistake in hindsight. The striker was brought in from Eintracht Frankfurt and endured a terrible time in the Royal white jersey before ultimately departing.

During his time at Real Madrid, Jovic scored only three goals across all competitions. That is way below expectations when you consider that he was brought in on a €60 million deal.

Jovic was even sent back on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt, but was unable to rediscover the form that he had shown at the club during his previous stint there. He joined Fiorentina on a permanent basis last summer and has been finding the back of the net once again lately.

As reported by Football Italia, while talking to la Repubblica, Jovic reflected on his tough time at Real Madrid and why things didn’t work out for him, as he said:

It would be safe to say that Jovic will go down as one of the worst signings in Real Madrid history. After his brilliant 2018/19 campaign with Eintracht Frankfurt, he arrived with high expectations surrounding him but failed to meet any of them.

At the same time, it is important to recognise that he was not dealt the best of hands either. Real Madrid is a tough club to settle at for any youngster, and the circumstances did not help Jovic.

Jovic has had a decent but not spectacular time at Fiorentina till now. At 25 years of age, he has time on his side though. And hopefully, he will get his career back on track. We can only wish him the best of luck moving forward.
