Duje Caleta-Car leaves Lyon to join Sassuolo

Duje Caleta-Car (29) has left Olympique Lyonnais on a free transfer to join Serie A side Sassuolo. The Croatian defender spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad in Spain.

Lyon had hoped to sell Caleta-Car this summer. Following his time on loan in Spain, he returned to the Rhône but did not feature in Paulo Fonseca’s plans. However, the former Olympique de Marseille defender was a top earner at OL. As a result, the club were keen to rid themselves of his salary, reported to be €250,000 per month.

However, a sale has not taken form. But Lyon were still keen to offload the player. As a result, a mutual agreement was reached to terminate the final year of his Lyon deal. A free agent, he has immediately joined Sassuolo in Italy on a free transfer. The centre-back leaves OL having played 57 times for the Ligue 1 club.
